Chapter 15
Severn
“I missed.” Severn paced. “I fucking missed.”
“It doesn’t matter. He’s ruined. Wasn’t that the idea?”
“No.” He stopped and faced the madam, hands clenched into fists. “Ruined is not enough.”
And to make matters worse, the allyanse had felt as though it had broken, and here Severn was, still wholly and thoroughly a fucking angel.
He dropped into a chair, one of many mismatched pieces of furniture tossed about the large warehouse. Moonlight poured in through the windows high in the walls and onto a suspended gallery, but below, where he and the madam were, only a string of lightbulbs dangling from steel trusses above lit the space. They’d entered through a back door and avoided the rooms where muffled voices seeped under closed doors, probably because those inside were cambion and Severn so-obviously angel.
He couldn’t return to his kin as an angel. And he couldn’t return with Mikhail still alive. And he couldn’t go back to Aerie. The madam and this warehouse, somewhere near the east end dockyards, were his only sanctuary.
“Fuck.” He slammed his head back into the chair and stared at the string of lights.
The madam had stayed quiet since breaking him out of the cage, but she’d also stayed close. She had played her part to perfection just as they’d discussed when she’d caught him in the cauldron. Tracking the train, breaking him out. Until that last second. If she hadn’t pulled on him, dislodging his aim, Mikhail would be dead. Another stupid mistake, another backhanded slap in the face from destiny.
He needed to think, to clear his head, to feed. To remind himself of who he was. “Where are your nephilim?”
The madam’s smile maneuvered her lips into a sly grin. “You have acquired a taste for angel?”
“More of a taste for male. No offense.”
Chuckling lightly, she dipped her chin. “I’ll see they’re brought in, my lord.”
“Don’t call me that,” he grumbled as she passed him for the door. He wasn’t anything right now, certainly not a lord, and definitely a failure. Argothun had called him skree, as had the other demon—the word was the highest insult. Something pretty but worthless. Angel. He’d been disassociated, his name and title deliberately forgotten. If he returned to the demons as he was, they’d kill him.
He closed his eyes. Thick emotion tried to choke him—emotion he shouldn’t even be feeling if he truly were angel. He had to get out of this wretched body. He had to find Mikhail and kill him. Mikhail was probably in Haven by now… Protected among his own kind, squirreled away for safekeeping.
How could he have missed? He had only been a few feet away. The arrow was poised…
The madam returned and told him the nephilim pair was preparing and would join him in the gallery above. He grunted an acknowledgment. At least stuck as angel, he could feed with all his senses, including touch. That was the only benefit of the illusion becoming permanent. If the nephilim were anything like Mikhail, he’d soon be brimming with power and lost to its thrall.
